Shafer's - Laney's Mysis

Shafer’s Flies – Shafer’s Laney’s Mysis – Part 6

The Shafer’s Flies series are all my flies that I have created over the years that I use day in and day out on the water. It has taken many guide trips and days out on the water fly fishing to perfect these bugs! Many of these flies have been in books and magazines over the years. I hope you enjoy this series and please don’t tell too many people about these flies I still use them every day out on the water.

Laney’s Mysis is named after my Daughter DeLaney Shafer. My nickname for her is Laney. She’s a bad ass fly fisherman. This fly has been in Fly Fisherman Magazine, High Country Angler Magazine, and a couple books including Pat Dorsey’s Book “Guide Flies” and it is on the cover of that book. I developed this pattern over several years guiding and fishing on the Blue River. I developed this pattern by putting a couple of the older Mysis patterns out there on the market together and I took bits and pieces of each one that i liked and made this fantastic pattern. Laney’s Mysis simply moves fish. I have seen many fish over the years move 2-4 feet for this pattern and the big dogs in the river seem to love it. In a pinch I will use this fly in still waters as a Chironomid, Just trim the Antron down to a small tuft and it works great! That’s a little secret of mine that I have kept for years. I fish this pattern under an indicator as an attractor fly or the second or third dropper in a dry – dropper – dropper rig. The other application for this fly is a secret so let’s keep this on down-low! I will also fish this in still waters as a Chironomid in a three fly rig under an indicator or on sinking line.
