Shafer's - Scud

Shafer’s Flies – Shafer’s Scud – Part 5

The Shafer’s Flies series are all my flies that I have created over the years that I use day in and day out on the water. It has taken many guide trips and days out on the water fly fishing to perfect these bugs! Many of these flies have been in books and magazines over the years. I hope you enjoy this series and please don’t tell too many people about these flies I still use them every day out on the water.

The Shafer’s Scud imitates a dying or molting scud. The key to this fly is the tying thread and hot spot. It helps keep that crustaceans look and along with the epoxy top makes this fly looks like the real deal. Scuds are in many of our waters here in Colorado and I use this pattern anytime scuds are present. I have put this pattern to work for many years in lakes and streams across the west. I tie these in sizes #22 – #14 and I use them on indicator rigs and tight line systems. There are a bunch of Scud patterns out there but I have found that the Shafer’s Scud outperforms those other patterns. give it a shot fish love em!

You can purchase my hand tied flies from this site as well and your local fly shop can get them in stock from Hollyflies.net.
