The Shafer’s Flies series are all my flies that I have created over the years that I use day in and day out on the water. It has taken many guide trips and days out on the water fly fishing to perfect these bugs! Many of these flies have been in books and magazines over the years. I hope you enjoy this series and please don’t tell too many people about these flies I still use them every day out on the water.
The First Fly is one of my favorites, The Thin Blue Midge and is named after my real life profession as a Deputy Sheriff. It was the first fly I designed many years ago. Originally designed off of larvae I found in stomach pumps from picky trout on the Colorado River Drainage. I have found that this simple Larvae pattern works well in freestone and tail waters across the west. Still my go to bug for the Colorado River and many different waters across the Rocky Mountain Region. Tie it in sizes 24-18 for midge imitations and it will cross over in sizes 18-14 for Caddis larvae. This pattern also works well in Western Still Waters, Hint-Hint.
You can purchase my hand tied flies from this site as well and your local fly shop can get them in stock from Hollyflies.net.
