The Shafer’s Flies series are all my flies that I have created over the years that I use day in and day out on the water. It has taken many guide trips and days out on the water fly fishing to perfect these bugs! Many of these flies have been in books and magazines over the years. I hope you enjoy this series and please don’t tell too many people about these flies I still use them every day out on the water.
The Tricky Bug is a fly I developed for picky trout on western tail waters. This fly works well in bigger sizes on freestone rivers as well. It is a versatile fly that can be used in a bunch of different situations out on the water. I apply this fly in situations when fish are in picky eating patterns or on very specific hatches. The application of this fly is as a midge but it will cross over to the complicated Trico hatches we have out west. I have found over the years that this fly will make big fish eat when these hatches are at their peak. I will fish this just under the surface in a dry – dropper rig or as the third fly in a dry – dropper – dropper rig lower in the water column. I will also fish this in a nymph rig towards the bottom of the water column before and after the main hatch as the second or third fly.
You can purchase my hand tied flies from this site as well and your local fly shop can get them in stock from Hollyflies.net.
